Update on Mystery Illness in Cambodia

Many of you have probably read or heard about the mystery illness affecting Cambodian children. As of now, medical experts on the ground in Cambodia have determined the illness was a mixture of pathogens—enterovirus 71 (hand, foot and mouth disease), streptococcus suis (a bacteria transferred from pigs to humans causing many illnesses) and dengue fever.

None of the Asia's Hope children in Cambodia have been affected. From our understanding, there are no cases of adults being infected, so any teams currently in or traveling soon to Cambodia should not be concerned about health safety beyond the normal health considerations for visiting Cambodia (available on the CDC website here). Consult your physician or other medical personnel for any questions or more information.
