Will the partnership between Asia’s Hope and Asia’s Hope Thailand continue?

We are committed to restoring funding to Asia’s Hope Thailand. We do not, however, believe that it is possible to restore the trust that has been lost between us and our current Thailand country director.

From the moment we identified evidence of financial misconduct, we pursued both fiscal accountability and relational reconciliation. At the close of a recent round of frank and constructive in-person meetings in Thailand, we believed that we had reached a framework of shared commitments that would allow us to work together with our Thailand country director and board. When we returned to the States, we received a letter stating that our Thai board would neither sign nor abide by the framework.

This and other breaches of trust have led us to conclude that our current Thailand national director is unwilling to resolve this conflict in good faith.

Are the children safe and receiving care?

Yes. We believe that our homes remain adequately funded for the time being.

Is Asia’s Hope providing any funding at this time for the kids in Thailand?

We are committed to providing scholarship funds for all of the Asia’s Hope kids currently enrolled in university or vocational training programs. We have already sent money for the first half of the year, and are prepared to fund the second half of the year as well. We cannot, however, in good conscience send money through Asia’s Hope Thailand at this time, and are working to establish alternate means of distributing – and accounting for – these scholarships.

Do you plan to press charges or pursue civil litigation?

We believe that Asia’s Hope, our donors, and the kids in our care are victims of significant, intentional – and possibly long-term – fraud and embezzlement.

We are working with our fiscal staff and board finance committee to identify the exact dimensions of the financial misconduct, and under the guidance of our legal counsel in the U.S. and Thailand, will pursue appropriate and proportional legal paths to recover any misappropriated funds.

Can we be confident that Asia’s Hope’s projects in Cambodia and India are secure?

Yes. On a recent month-long visit to the U.S., our Cambodian and Indian directors worked with us to review and renew their longstanding commitments to transparency, accountability, and reciprocal responsibilities. The governing boards and directors in these countries have agreed to a statements of intent, which you can view here.

We have also initiated a deeper review of the fiscal and legal frameworks that govern our projects in Cambodia and India, and are working with legal counsel in the U.S. and abroad to identify and address any potential gaps in policy, oversight and enforcement. 

Why wasn’t this misconduct identified earlier?

We believe that our finance manager in Thailand worked with multiple parties external to Asia’s Hope to create sophisticated, deceptive records which we relied on as accurate. We also believe that our efforts to detect this were complicated by actions taken by our Thailand country director to shield this misconduct from detection and the responsible parties from accountability.
